Question by !sk84urlif!: My mtd lawn mower won’t start?

So I took off the pesky switches on the stick that turns on the blades and the brakes (I only have to turn the key to use the starter) and attached all the orange wires and left all the yellow wires alone. When I turn the key, the starter tries to get the motor going, but doesn’t succeed. What must I do to get it to start?

The kill wire to the motor may be grounded out and not letting it start. I would check that. It’s usually on the side of the motor. Remove that wire and see if it starts. I’ve had it happen to me.

I bought this lawnmower at a yard sale for 5 dollars. Mower ran fine last year, and did not wanna start this year. I got it running by moving the governor lever toward the back of the engine while cranking, but still had cold srart problems after the engine sat awhile. I cleaned the carb with carb cleaner last night, and the engine cold started good today. I will give it a few more cold start trys to make sure the carb works properly. I have a feeling the carb cleaner worked.
