Fixing Up The Snapper Lawn Mower (Part 1).wmv

This mower caught fire and was discarded. This is how I fixed it. (Part 1 of 2)

Just found last week. Gas tank was bone dry. Engine started right up after adding new gas. Runs great! Engine does not stall. It was just me playing with the throttle.

@SuperKONR it hasn’t been run for any real length of time whilst it was like that…

  2. SuperKONR says:

@KrankieV2 Weird its not scored. I use all lawnmowers for parts on horizontals because I have no heavy flywheels to use verticals for projects.

  3. KrankieV2 says:

@SuperKONR it seems to be fine to be honest. I dopn’t care though, I’m just using that POS black motor for parts

  4. SuperKONR says:

@KrankieV2 That’ll do it. With all that crap under the shroud did it overheat and score the cylinder?

  5. KrankieV2 says:

@SuperKONR someone spilled gas on it while it was hot.

  6. SuperKONR says:

This mower caught fire and was discarded. Then it’s next owner caught it on fire again lol no wonder it flamed before it was DIRTY!!!!

  7. 1944johndeerel says:

@KrankieV2 i have a valve lapper one of those things you crank by hand but i dont think i have any of the compound lol. but i usually can get the valves to seat good after grinding. after grinding the valves you have to grind the tip of the stem as close as you can get it to the amount you took off the valve surface. the souix machines have micrometers for that my antique van norman does not so i have to carefully do it by guess and check.

  8. KrankieV2 says:

@1944johndeerel I plan on getting the stuff to do valve lapping. I really need that shit.

  9. 1944johndeerel says:

all the work you do with engines you should invest in a valve refacer if you find one that isnt way too much $, i have to figure out how i am going to fix the flexible shaft that spins the valve as its being ground. its a 1920’s valve grinder and the flexible shaft broke lol. makes things a little harder. and i cant just pop in a replacement part lol. that would be easy.

  10. 1944johndeerel says:

@KrankieV2 thats the idea anyways, i might even pick up a new rod for the old thing. the knocking was starting to drive me mad but i still havent determined if its a rod knock or piston slap. oh well its a 1955 and its still a very relaible engine i cant complain. and as a bonus all that smoke it makes is great for keeping away the skeeters! but i think it will have soo much more uupphhhh to it after a rebuild. its a pretty tired old engine but it gets the tilling done.

  11. KrankieV2 says:

@1944johndeerel that should work well for it. :)

  12. KrankieV2 says:

@1972FordF150 WOW, that is a lot of carbon.

it looked like just a mouse nest in there.

  13. KrankieV2 says:

@1JessieStender cool, that thing’s been there so long I forgot about it, lol.

  14. 1JessieStender says:

nice video man!! I noticed your “men working” sign in the back. I have the SAME sign haging up in my shop!! AWESOME!! :D

  15. 1944johndeerel says:

i ground the valves in my 1955 rototiller earler this year. it has much better compression! i actually had to stael a valve out of a parts engine it had a bad one. but then i wanted to measure the ring wear and if the piston and cyl were standard bore, and found a cracked oil ring. so i only had another used one. well it smokes like a 2 pack a day smoker again but atleast it still starts and runs good. i will get it some new rings and hone the cyl soon,

  16. 1972FordF150 says:

Holy crap ! WTF was that in the enigne ? a mouse nest or a shitload of grass lol I’ve never seen anything so bad before lol. Oh and the 77 briggs when i took it apart the recess in the head was FLUSH with carbon with the flat part. thumbs up man !

  17. KrankieV2 says:

@Smallgasengine1 yeah, it doesn’t make that sound when I don’t press the spray button as hard.

  18. Smallgasengine1 says:

    @KrankieV2 hahaha its dumb alright

  19. KrankieV2 says:

@Smallgasengine1 just the retarded carb cleaner can it’s dumb

  20. Smallgasengine1 says:

whats that snapping noise when you sprayed carb cleaner?

  21. KrankieV2 says:

@coolbluelights yeah the fire surprised me a bit LOL

the last owner must have spilled a lot of fuel on it for it to burn that badly.

  22. coolbluelights says:

holy crap that engine was naaasssty!! *catches on fire* “um.. didn’t expect that to happen” *stomp* LMAO! man that’s gotta be the worst engine I’ve ever seen! can’t believe it actually fired up!

  23. MrMoterKid says:

@MO3MINI Who knows, maybe they just got bored of it

  24. MrMoterKid says:

These older Briggs are awesome! I got one two days ago, only thing shitty about it is the deck has lots of holes and cracks and the paint is peeling of it big time. Even the Briggs and Stratton decal is in good shape! Has a really nice idle too. But mine usually starts in two pulls, three pulls if you keep it on a slow idle speed, but it starts right up if you do that Davidsfarm trick of tipping it on the side for 2-3 seconds.

  25. MO3MINI says:

brings up the question of why the hell did they throw a good lawnmower away

  31. jcomm333 says:

    i love those engines….

  32. carolinasled says:

I just picked up one of these off craigslist for free. Its funny people would rather have the new light weight thin deck mowers. I had to re-coil the starter spring and re-cord it and she runs like a top. I need to start making videos like this. Do you make a video for every find or run across?

  33. craig1974 says:

i sold the mower last year.

  34. buddylee6996 says:

My Grandpa had one of those but it was Self Propelled for 20 years. Would you be willing to sell just the engine? What is the Model, Type, and Code off of the flywheel cover?

  35. DHWDeadlyDemon says:

“Snapper” is a nickname for a vagina.
I can’t believe They made a mower company named like that.

  38. jack9102 says:

i can tell u wer playin w/ the throttle cause the cable was movin around at 0:57

  39. rpal10 says:

i just got one out of the about a week ago its a 1970 runs great it even had the bag

  40. craig1974 says:

Yeah i since got the matching bag, and the side chute from a junk 1973 Model. I tried selling it on Craigslist, but it wont sell. Everyone wants the high HP newer mowers.

  41. ATOMICBIGFOOT2 says:

Thats the same model snapper I learned to mow grass with. The original grass bag was white with snapper logo. I used to kick the bag to see how full it was. Keep that mower. or sell it to me.

  42. dawolf24 says:

    awsome start

  43. gasman7777 says:

snappers are one of the toughest mowers around! that looks in preety good shape for its age.

  44. Dylan169113 says:

well if you watched Davesfarm Mower vids all the way through he should you how to oil the ratchet (the pull starter thing) you should do that to all of your mowers

  45. e666d says:

i have 3 of that same motor on two mowers one push one self propeled one parts as of today and i can tell you this them older 3.5hp motors will out perform the new ones of twice the rated hp hope you can make a few extra bucks with your lawn mower fix/sell thing and if you can find a kid who wants to learn it is well worth it to give him/her a few bucks/pop or whatever to have them clean/paint ect. in exchange to show them how to fix/how an engine works i am 39 but have some great young freinds

  46. craig1974 says:

Yeah it starts, and runs very well. I just found a 1973 Snapper parts mower the other day that had the matching grass bag, and the metal attachment which converts the mower to a side discharge. That mower ran, but had carb problems, and a leaky crankshaft seal. I stripped the engine, and kept the deck for scrap alumminum. Deck had chunks taken out of it. Now the 1974 Snapper is complete! Some people look forward to deer hunting, but i look forward to junk season.

  47. JASONS1PLACE says:

awsome!!! sounds like brand new. unbeleivable what people throw away .good vid and vintage mower.
